Cirencester Creative Dance Academy’s (CCDA) Phoenix Cheerleading put Cirencester on the map last Sunday by taking their four teams to compete at Gloucester Cheerleading Competitions and totally smashed it!
The four teams named, Sparks, Ignites, Poms and Flames were on fire, living up to their name and walking away with 5 trophies along with winning the highest score of the overall competition.
This was the first competition for the Sparks (aged 5 – 7 years) who walked away with 2nd place in their category and Ignites (aged 8 – 12 years) who won their category along with winning the overall highest score.
Pom (aged 12+ years) and Flames (aged 8 – 16 years) came home with three 1st places, winning all their categories and competing in the highest level in the open cheerleading category!
The competition, which took place on Sunday, March 31st, at Severn Vale School, Gloucester, saw 12 different teams come in from places like Gloucester, Bristol and Exeter. It featured three categories, Pom Dance, Open Cheerleading and Stunt Cheerleading, all of which were divided into level one and level two competitors.
CCDA dance school started the competition team, coached by Miss Lauren, 18 months ago to take cheerleading in Cirencester to the next level. Back then, the team only consist of Pom and Flames with 16 girls but because of its popularity and success, auditions were held late last year to create the two new teams, Sparks & Ignites and offer younger pupils the opportunity to join the team.
CCDA has been teaching cheerleading for three years since September 2014 and they now have over 70 girls who attend on a regular basis.
Katharine Lucy Bates - Principle Teacher of CCDA said, “I am so proud of the cheer teams, their hard work, dedication and showing true camaraderie whilst having fun; they are an inspiration to us all, Go teams CCDA!
Lauren Berry – Their Coach said, “Cheerleading is known as 'The sport of smiles'. We started cheerleading classes over three years ago and last April entered our first team (Phoenix Flames) into a competition, since then we have grown and now have four cheerleading teams. The girls from CCDA all work together as a unit and support each other in classes and in competitions. The older cheerleaders are great role models for the newer and younger team members.
At each practise they put in 100% and boost the confidence in each other.
It's not the easiest of sports but with their determination, trust and commitment they can achieve amazing results. Not only do they work hard but also they have fun whilst doing it. Cheerleading is all about having fun, teamwork and sportsmanship.
I am so proud of each and every one of the girls in the teams and we are looking forward to competing in more competitions.
